Opening Day 2009: Same Old Song and Dance thumbnail

Perhaps Steven Tyler of Aerosmith was a bit of a prophet when he wrote the song, Same Old Song and Dance. The song might as well be the theme song for the Evergreen Park Diamondbacks when it comes to their Opening Day.

Short infielders, outfielders, and a catcher, the Diamondbacks dropped both games to the Worth Astros on Sunday at Plesantdale Park in front of a crowd of 15 people.

The Diamondbacks were the first to put runs up on the board in Game One, jumping out to an early 2-run lead with RBI’s by Thad Sochacki and Don Myczek.

The Astros looked to respond in the third inning. After double and advance to third on a pass ball, the Astros had a man on third with one out. A sharp ground ball to the Diamondback third baseman caught the runner too far off the bag to return. A run down ensued. A costly defensive mental lapse by the Diamondbacks, catcher left the pitcher, Ed Sochacki chasing the runner back to third with nobody covering. The batter ended up advancing to second during the rundown. The Astros managed to drive both runs in on a single to left center, tying the score at two.

Both teams’ bats would go silent from that point until the bottom of the 8th when the Astros crossed the winning run from second base across the plate on a smash over the head of center fielder Sergio Senese.

While severely shorthanded, the Diamondbacks played competitively throughout the first game, but the end result was the same – another difficult Opening Day loss.
